Solar Will Soon Be the Standard: Are You Ready?

The EU has spoken: starting in 2027, all new public buildings in the EU must include solar solutions. By 2029, this rule will apply to all new private buildings too. This isn’t a distant policy idea—it’s a clear roadmap for the future of construction, which many countries are already adopting in full speed.

If you’re a roofer, prefab builder, or architect, this directive directly impacts your work. The buildings you design and construct will soon require solar integration. The question is: will you be ready?

Picture this: a homeowner asks you to replace their roof, but now, they’re also expecting it to generate power. Or imagine you're building a series of modern prefab homes, and solar isn't a trendy add-on—it's legally required. These aren’t futuristic ideas; they’re scenarios you’ll be facing in just a few short years.

Roofing is no longer just about tiles and waterproofing. Every roof will likely need to produce energy. For roofers, this is a turning point. Those who act now can become go-to experts in solar-ready installations. Our new roofers in Sweden have told us that after just a few solar roof projects, their teams have begun receiving more complex jobs from builders who lacked solar experience. That's the kind of edge early movers gain.

Prefab builders are already known for innovation and efficiency. The new solar directive pushes these strengths even further. Solar roofs will no longer be an upsell—they'll be expected. We’ve seen prefab manufacturers shift their design process slightly to include solar from the start, making the rest of the build more streamlined and the final product more appealing to energy-conscious buyers. And when done right, solar doesn’t delay timelines—it accelerates market readiness.

Architects face the unique challenge of balancing aesthetics and compliance. Some worry that solar compromises their creative freedom. But the truth is, with the right technology, solar can be part of the design. Our full-roof solutions are sleek, integrated, and customizable. We've worked with architects who at first were skeptical, then surprised at how solar enhanced the look of the final build—without clutter, without compromise.

Whether you're designing, building, or installing roofs, the shift toward solar is already underway. Those who act early will be the ones still in business—and thriving—when the regulations kick in.

At Solarstone, we invite you to partner with us. We’ve spent over a decade perfecting solar roof systems and building trusted relationships across Europe. With over 1,500 roofs installed in 10+ countries, we provide not just products, but the training and support you need to succeed in the solar era.

There’s more to lose by waiting than there is to gain. Let’s talk. Let’s prepare. Let’s build the future—together.

This directive mandates the installation of solar energy systems on buildings, with specific timelines:

By 2026: All new public and commercial buildings with a useful floor area larger than 250 m² must be equipped with solar installations.

By 2027: All existing public and commercial buildings with a useful floor area larger than 250 m² undergoing major renovations are required to install solar systems.

By 2029: All new residential buildings must have solar installations.

These measures aim to significantly boost the EU’s renewable energy capacity, with projections indicating the potential installation of an additional 150 to 200 gigawatts (GW) of rooftop solar power, capable of supplying energy to approximately 56 million European homes.
